Prospects for an Italian Path toward India and the Indo-Pacific – Prospettive di una via italiana verso l’India e l’area indo-pacifica
Giacomo Guarini
Abstract – This paper examines Italy’s evolving foreign-policy engagement with India and the broader Indo-Pacific region. It analyzes the political momentum behind renewed bilateral relations, the economic and financial deepening driven by trade, investment, and institutional initiatives, and the strategic significance of emerging Eurasian connectivity projects such as the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). The study also assesses Italy’s growing military presence in the Indo-Pacific, the influence of U.S. strategic priorities, and Italy’s efforts to balance alliance commitments with limited autonomy vis-à-vis China. Overall, the paper argues that Italy’s Indo-Pacific engagement represents neither a purely tactical adjustment nor a full strategic pivot, but a calibrated extension of its Mediterranean outlook amid shifting global power dynamics.
