Abstract – This paper analyzes the strategic logic of containment pursued by the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War (1947–1991), highlighting its ideological, political, and military dimensions. Through a comparative historical approach, it examines the origins and evolution of the U.S. containment doctrine—rooted in George Kennan’s Long Telegram and The Sources of Soviet Conduct—and the Soviet response embodied in the Brezhnev Doctrine. The study explores how both superpowers sought to maintain global equilibrium through deterrence, ideological competition, and regional influence, while avoiding direct military confrontation. By integrating primary diplomatic sources with major historiographical contributions, the paper interprets the bipolar order as a system of reciprocal security and structural antagonism. The final section reflects on the decline of the Soviet Union and the transition toward a post-bipolar order, emphasizing the lasting impact of Cold War containment strategies on contemporary international relations.
