The book Precision Medicine in Africa: Promises and Opportunities (Springer Singapore 2025; ISBN 978-981-96-8958-3) provides a comprehensive analysis of the challenges and opportunities linked to the implementation of genomic and precision medicine approaches across African healthcare systems. Drawing on evidence from bioinformatics, public health, and health policies, the work argues that precision medicine represents a significant opportunity to improve diagnosis, treatment, and disease prevention on the continent, if development strategies are adapted to local realities.

Fouzia Radouani is the research director of ‘’Institut Pasteur’’, based in Casablanca. She is responsible for the Chlamydiae and Mycoplasma laboratory; her research interest includes all diseases associated with Chlamydiae and Mycoplasma infections. She is the principal investigator of the H3AbioNet Pasteur du Maroc Node and also works as part of the H3Africa consortium and the Africa Biogenome project.
Lyndon Zass is a Project Manager at the Computational Biology Division of the University of Cape Town in South Africa. With a background in Molecular Biology and Human Genetics, he holds an MSc in Human Genetics, which he obtained from Stellenbosch University. He is the project manager for the African Genomics Data Hub and co-leads the eLwazi Open Data Science Platform’s Data Support Working Group.
Faisal M. Fadlelmola was the principal investigator of the NIH-funded H3ABioNet Sudan Node (July 2012–June 2024) and a key member of the African Precision Medicine Initiative and the African Genomic Medicine Training (AGMT) Planning Team. He is an accomplished academic and research leader with extensive experience in health genomics, bioinformatics, computer science, biotechnology, and life sciences.
In its investigation, the text focuses on the underrepresentation of African populations in genomic research and clinical trials. The authors contend that much of the current evidence base required for genomic medicine derives from European and North American populations and is therefore insufficiently representative of African peoples’ genetic diversity. This imbalance not only limits the clinical applicability of existing genomic data but also risks reinforcing global inequalities in healthcare provision and biomedical innovation. The book consequently positions the development of African-led genomic research initiatives as both a scientific necessity and an issue of health equity. The volume’s principal contribution lies in its policy-oriented approach to implementation. Rather than restricting itself to theoretical discussions of genomic medicine, it proposes a detailed framework for the development of national genomic medicine programs. Recommendations include investment in sequencing technologies, biorepositories, data capture systems, computational infrastructure, and specialized training programs for clinicians, researchers, bioinformaticians, and ethics committees. The discussion of initiatives such as H3Africa and H3ABioNet illustrates the potential for regional collaboration and demonstrates that substantial groundwork has already been established for continent-wide implementation.
The book devotes considerable attention to the ethical, legal, and social implications of genomic medicine, which constitutes one of its strongest analytical dimensions. The authors emphasize the uniquely sensitive nature of genomic data, highlighting concerns surrounding privacy, informed consent, ownership of biological samples, and cross-border data sharing. Emphasis is placed on the absence of harmonized data protection legislation across African countries and the need for governance frameworks capable of protecting vulnerable populations while facilitating scientific progress.
The discussion of informed consent is especially valuable, as it recognizes the challenges posed by varying levels of health literacy, socioeconomic inequality, and digital disparity across different communities.
From a methodological perspective, the text successfully integrates technical discussions of next-generation sequencing technologies, bioinformatics pipelines, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence into broader considerations of healthcare delivery. This demonstrates the interdependence of scientific innovation, infrastructure development, and policy reform in achieving sustainable implementation of precision medicine. Nevertheless, the work exhibits certain limitations. The proposed framework occasionally appears ambitious given the infrastructural and financial constraints facing many African healthcare systems.
While the authors acknowledge issues such as limited healthcare expenditure, shortages of skilled personnel, and competing public health priorities, the feasibility of implementing large-scale genomic programs within resource-limited settings receives comparatively limited critical examination. Greater engagement with questions of sustainability, financing models, and political feasibility would have strengthened the analysis.
Despite these limitations, Precision Medicine in Africa represents an important contribution to contemporary discussions on global health and biomedical equity. By combining scientific analysis with ethical reflection and policy recommendations, its perspective makes it particularly valuable for scholars and practitioners working in public health and health policy.
