Faglie americane – American Fault Lines
Francesco Narcisi
Abstract – The article analyzes the deep social, political, and cultural fractures currently dividing the United States, focusing on the rise of internal violence and the social disintegration of the Midwest. Beginning with recent episodes of political violence, it explores how radicalization, institutional distrust, and the growing polarization between Democrats and Republicans have reached unprecedented levels. At a structural level, the decline of the Midwestern middle class – once the engine of the American Dream – is identified as a central cause of the crisis: deindustrialization, outsourcing, and rising inequality have generated widespread resentment and a sense of abandonment. In parallel, the erosion of confidence in America’s global role and its military institutions contributes to a broader identity crisis. The purpose of the article is to examine how likely the current climate of internal violence and social fragmentation could escalate into a civil conflict, assessing both the resilience of federal institutions and the political system’s ability to contain internal collapse. Ultimately, the analysis seeks to determine whether these divisions represent a cyclical phase in the American experience or the early signs of an irreversible transformation of the nation’s social and political collectivity.
